As
all other Armenians in the beginning of the war Hagop also was deported with
his parents, a brother and a little sister. After a long and troublesome
journey afoot the caravan reached Aleppo. There his father became ill and died.
After some days rest the caravan was driven further on in the direction of
Deir-el-Zor. When the poor people reached Khabur they were attacked by Arabs
and a terrible massacre took place. Hagop's mother, brother and sister were
taken away by Arabs and he does not know about their fate. Hagop remained among
a lot of women and children. The next day some Tchetchens came and threw them
all into a big pit. Then they gathered a lot of fuel and put fire on it. Hagop
hid himself under the corpses and in the night he climbed up and fled to a
village nearby. An old Arab women took him in her tent. After a few days
another Arab came and brought him into his tent. There he stayed twelve years.
Newly he went with his possessor to Hassitshe. There our agent found him and
persuaded him to follow him.
