The father of this boy died before the war. The Armenians
of Erzroom were mostly deported to the vilayets of Harpoot and Diarbekir.
Hammas' family was one of the first deported. Hammas with his mother and two
sisters was driven to the mountains and after several days they were deported
with another caravan. Most of the women and girls were half-nacked. They have
been robbed of everything. Within a few days the mother and the small brother
became ill, both died the next day. Hammas had to take care of his two sisters.
They were hungry and thristy, but nobody could help them as all were in need of
the same thing. One of his sisters died, perhaps of hunger. Finally the caravan
reached a place Argana-Maden. There they were attacked and robbed by the Kurds,
there he lost his last sister. He himself was taken prisoner and became the
slave of a Kurd. Tired of this kind of life he fled over the frontier, met our
agent and came to our Rescue-Home.
Left our care: August 13,
1927. Selfsupporting.
