His father was an employee of the Turkish government. In the beginning of the war he was put in prison and killed there for the reason of being an Armenian.

When Armenians were deported from Sbarta he also with his mother and brother were exiled to Khaboor near Der-el-Zor. His mother could not endure the fatigue of the desert and died on the road. His brother was killed by Arabs and Arshag remained all alone among strangers.

An Arab of a nomadic tribe named Shamma took him to the camp and he became a shepherd. An escape from the desert was impossible for he did not know where to go to. Once the tribe came close to a village named Tel Samen he came to the village and found Armenians there. One of our employees was there and he sent him to us.
