Her father was killed before the Great War. Her poor mother came on the road with her
children, two girls and one boy. Her sister helped her to carry the little
ones. They reached Mardin. There the sister and the two girls were dragged away
by Arabs. The mother with her little boy were driven further on to Mosul. There
the boy died.
Shamir tells us that she remembers that in the night a
big man took her away by force. It was a Sheikh, by whom she stayed many years
till she was sold to a Kurd. He became a soldier and died. Later Shamir was
given to the son of a Hamal. He was very poor and had but one hand. Newly they
went with train to Syria. There in the train an Armenian saw her recognized her
and told her that her mother was living in Aleppo. When they reached there they
succeeded in getting away.
Shamir is now living with
her mother.
Left our care: January 30,
