In the beginning of the Armenian
massacres his father was killed and his mother became ill and died. Varteres
was deported with his sister, who in the village Bembig fell into the hands of
the Turks. Varteres was forced to go on with the caravan, but as a little
child, he could not walk quickly. Thus being left behind he came into the
possession of a Turk. When he grew up he remembered his sister and was always
eager to find her. Some muleteers found him one day outside the village Tootli
and took him with them to Arabpounar from where our agent sent him to us.
