The whole family was deported to Hassan-Tshelebi. On the road men were separated from the caravan and were killed. His mother could not endure to see her husband been massacred. She became ill and died a few days later. The survivors of the caravan of deportation were conducted to Malatia. Hovsep was put into the Armenian church of that town and his two sisters to another church. In this was Hovsep was separated from his sisters and he never get news from them.

After a few days' stay in the church Hovsep was taken to a Kourdish village where he remained nine years as a farmer.

Hovsep remembered his being an Armenian but he controlled himself very well.

Kourds were going and coming to Malatia quite often. They were talking among themselves about politics and the last news they brought home. Once or twice Hovsep heard a speach about Armenians who were emigrating to Syria.

Once a Kourd from his village was going to Malatia, and Hovsep did accompany him. On the road the Kourd attacked and robbed Sarkis at once and even wounded him. The fanatical Kourd intended to kill him but Sarkis threw himself into a river and saved in this way his life. After an hour or two Sarkis continued his way to Malatia and reached the city late in the evening. An Armenian recognized him and took him to his house and took care of him until he was recovered.

After his recovery he came with a caravan of Armenians to this city.
