Hovhannes as a little child during
the deportation does not know his parents' name but he remembered a great
confusion, the men fleeing, women weeping, soldiers and Turks entering into the
Armenian houses in great hurry and fury, etc. During that he lost his parents
and never got news about them. He came with the caravan as far as Mardin where
he was taken by an Arab to his house. He fled many times but was recaptured and
punished. Once after ten days journey afoot he succeeded in reaching Hassitshe,
whence by our agent was sent to us.
