His father was a victim of the first Armenian massacres which took place in Adana several years before the war. His mother died also before the war and Astoor became very early an orphan.
When the Armenian deportation started in 1915 he was deported with other Armenians to a town named Nizib. In this town he was taken to a Turkish family and he remained nine years there as a farmer.
His cousin was in Aleppo and heard about Astoor's being in Nizib. He wrote him several times explaining him that he is an Armenian and that some of his relatives are alive in Syria. Astoor asked his master to permit him to go to Aleppo. The Turk allowed him and he came to Aleppo and did not return to Turkey.
