Vartan was deported with his parents. The caravan reached "Tel-Afar" a village near Mossul. There a terrible massacre took place. Vartan's parents were killed. He himself fell in the hands of an Arab, who kept him as a shepherd many years. The poor boy was illtreated and wanted to get away but where to go? One day he met with another Armenian boy, who told him that he intended to flle to Mosul.
