Agavni is from Erzerum, where the Armenians suffered
particularly during the wartime. She was deported with her mother and three
brothers. Near Diarbekir they were attacked by Kurds and Arabs, who robbed,
killed and dragged away with them women and children. Agavni, who was wounded
in her chest, fell unconscious to the ground. A Kurd pitied her. He said:
"I am no murderer, do not fear," and he carried Agavni and her mother
to his house. Some years they stayed with that man, then the mother died and
soon after also their benefactor. Agavni was then forced to marry a young Kurd.
One day she was working on the field, she met with an Armenian priest from
Mardin, who told her about Miss Jeppe's house. He helped her to pass the Syrian
frontier, and she is now with her little girl staying in our home.
