Yusuf's family was deported in 1915
with the population of Mardin. The caravan was conducted to the Syrian deserts.
After a painful journey they reached Deir-el-Zor, where his mother fell
exhausted and died a few days later. Yusuf was taken into an Arab's house,
where although too small had to work hard. As he grew up came into connection
with an Armenian shoe-maker who advised him to go to Aleppo to learn a trade.
Our agent was informed and Yousouf was sent to us.
